While introducing effective hair care to daily routine, you might feel overwhelmed by tons of articles, especially when they contain contradictory pieces of information. Check top 5 hair-care tips that will let you define your hair type and suit the best hair care – don’t wait any longer, care for your hair like a pro!
1. Determine your hair problem & set a goal
What would you like to change about your hair? There are plenty of things we want to do – make hair grease-free, hold back hair loss, grow long hair before a wedding, moisturize dry hair… Think about the thing that you don’t like about your hair, what’s your dream hair like and what problem you want to solve (thinning, oiliness, dull color, hair breakage). Then you can start striving for the goal.
You need to note some limitations, though. For example, if you have naturally fine hair, you cannot turn it to thick tresses. Still, you can make it look way better.
2. Define your hair type
This is the first step you make towards the best hair care. If your hair is very dry, you need to replenish moisture using humectants and emollients, and if it’s also damaged, you need to detect the wrongdoer and avoid it.
Think of 3 facts:
- Level of moisture (is your hair dry, damaged or normal?)
- Texture (is it thick, fine, medium?)
- Curl type (is it straight, wavy or curly?)
If you already know your type, move on to customized hair care and look for tips that are strictly connected with your hair e.g. how to care for curly/wavy hair, how to repair damaged hair, how to moisturize dry hair, etc.
3. Define your hair porosity
Simply put, porosity tells you about the state of your hair and the external cuticle layer which affects the hair’s ability to absorb water and different substances. The larger the gaps in the cuticle layer, the higher the porosity (and worse condition of hair). You can come across different defects in the outside hair coat e.g. deficiency of keratin or damaged cuticles. There are three degrees of hair porosity:
- low
- medium
- high
If you don’t know your hair porosity, do an online test so then you will know you should search for products suited to your type of porosity.
4. Determine your scalp type
Skin on the head has a huge impact on the condition of your hair. Disturbed function of sebum glands, extremely dry or easily-irritated scalp… this is what affects your hair and its health. The scalp is dry/normal/oily/sensitive/affected by dandruff.
If your skin is normal, go for a “normal” shampoo. If it’s dry, oily or sensitive or you struggle with dandruff, you obviously need matching products to improve the state of the scalp. Cold-pressed oils are among the best natural hair products because they repair the hair throughout its length as well as the scalp, plus you can match them to your hair porosity.
5. Stop damaging your hair!
The number of hair-damaging factors that we aren’t aware of is shocking. Do you harshly towel-dry the hair, use hot airflow while blow-drying, use a flat iron or tug strands while brushing? Sleeping with wet hair causes damage to hair as well. Run through your daily hair-related activities, detect the wrongdoers and start treating your hair right! If you avoid the damaging agents, you’ll soon notice a great change. Good luck!
